"The Saints' Hall of Fame", "The Heroes of Faith", "The Honor Roll of the Old Testament Saints", "The Westminster Abbey of Scripture", and "The Faith Chapter", are all but a few of the titles that have been given to Hebrews 11. In short, Hebrews 11 is a summary of the lives and labors of great men and women of faith found in the Old Testament. In each instance, you will find the elements of faith: 1) God spoke to them through His Word; 2) their inner selves were stirred in different ways; 3) they obeyed God; 4) He bore witness about them. However, these people didn't all behave well, yet there were moments in their lives where they demonstrated the elements of faith listed above and are therefore heroes.
Join us this Sunday at 9:30am, as we unpack the story of Rahab the prostitute. An unlikely candidate for the faithful's hall of fame. Not only was Rahab a prostitute, but she was also a Gentile, and a Canaanite by way of the Amorites, a race that God had long before marked for destruction (Genesis 15:16). Yet that is how God's grace works. His mercy is open to all who will receive it, and His grace has always been wider than Israel, even in Old Testament time. Finally, not only is Rahab commended for her great faith, she is even a part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). Hope to see you Sunday at 9:30am! Calvary Parkside Parents Night Out. On August 4th and August 18th, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, Parkside will be hosting a Community Parents Night Out. This event is designed so parents can go out for a night on the town feeling confident that their kids are safe and having the time of their lives. Parkside will provide dinner, snacks, games and fun activities for the kids. Doug Anne Ortlund, in her book Up with Worship, compares two kinds of communities commonly found in churches. One she describes as a bag of marbles. The people come together for fellowship, they rattle together as they rub up against one another. They make noise and throw off light beautifully. They connect, but they don't mingle. The other kind of community she describes as a bag of grapes. Shake the bag around a little, and it starts to drip. Look inside and it's not a pretty sight. Each grape (life) bleeds into the others. That's Koinonia. That's authentic, Spirit-powered fellowship.
As Christians, we have a commitment to one another, regardless of our positions, our levels of maturity, or how long we've been believers. We are mutually bound by a duty to "drip" and "bleed" into one another, as we help each other grow toward greater maturity. Every church congregation must commit to godly priorities that further this purpose, just like the first body of Christ followers found in Acts 2:41-47. Doug When we come to Jesus, the power of the Holy Spirit transforms our lives. In Paul's second letter to the church at Corinth, he wrote about the freedom that comes from living in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.
"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom". II Corinthians 3:17 "...where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom". The source of our freedom in Christ is not found in ourselves, our riches, our gifts, positions, power, prestige, or accomplishments. Instead, the source of our freedom is in His Holy Spirit. No longer do we need to live imprisoned in fear, shame, guilt, or constant need to impress anybody--especially God. No longer do we need to feel the pressure of living like Jesus in our own power. Instead, we simply allow Christ to shine through us. Paul goes on in verse 18 of II Corinthians 3, to write: "And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." II Corinthians 3:18 This Sunday, we will take a two week break from our series on Heroes of Faith, as we welcome our guest speaker, Dr. Dennis Beatty. Pastor Beatty currently serves with Interim Pastor Ministry (IPM), providing intentional interim leadership for churches who are searching for a new Senior Pastor. Dennis has over 50+ years of pastoral experience, serving as the Senior Pastor at 4 churches in California and Arizona. But more importantly, he was my first ministry boss, as I served under Dennis as a youth pastor. Having "cut my teeth" under his leadership, I consider him one of my ministry mentors. Doug In a world that is dependent on the senses and constantly critiqued by the sciences, a Christian life of faith is difficult to understand. In his book The Root of the Righteousness, A.W. Tozer notes that a true Christian "feels supreme love for the One whom he has never seen, talks familiarly every day to Someone he cannot see,...sees the invisible, hears the inaudible and knows that which passeth knowledge." The more skeptical and materialistic our world becomes, the more outlandish the person of faith will appear. When we live with confidence is what we hope for and assurance in what we do not see, not only does our faith become stronger, but Jesus becomes non-ignorable.

After being sold by his jealous brothers, wrongfully accused of a crime, and put in prison, he still trusted that God was who He said He was and would do what He said he would do. Joseph knew God was faithful and was with him in the valleys and mountaintops, and God refined him through the trials he faced. No matter what trials we experience, we can trust God with our future because He has shown Himself to be faithful in our past and in our present. The Book of Hebrews tells us we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses of faith and we look to Jesus who is the author and the perfecter of our faith. Faith is a journey, a race of endurance that we are called to run. This week we are going to look at the life of Noah as an example of faith – Noah believed God. Noah also found grace in the eyes of God. His life stands as a witness to us and we are going to look at the race faith he ran. Noah stood out in the age he lived – he led his family well and they were saved from the destruction that came upon the whole world. Jesus said that before He returns it will be just like the days of Noah, people will be living as if God doesn’t exist. Did you know the majority of Beaverton High School is being torn down to make way for a brand-new Beaverton High School. Calvary Parkside has been asked to play a small, but critical role in the rebuild process. Join us at Beaverton High School on Thursday, June 22nd, as we help teachers and staff pack up their classrooms and offices so it can all be easily relocated to portable buildings. Haggai was one of the few prophets who saw immediate and tangible results for his prophetic ministry. God's people accepted his criticism and responded by putting all of their time, talent and treasure into rebuilding the temple of the Lord. The temple was completed within 4 years.
Today's church can easily get distracted in the area of kingdom priorities. The task laid upon all Christians is to be engaged in the building of the true and spiritual church: by prayer (Eph. 6:18-20), by witness (I Peter 3:15), by life (Phil. 2:14-16; Matt. 5:16), by labor (I Cor. 15:58) and by financial support (Phil. 4:15-19). Take time to read these verses and then join us on Sunday as we gather together and "Worship God Passionately." As the people of God once again got back to work on rebuilding the temple, God suddenly calls a time-out and halts the work in order to correct a theological error. The people had begun to feel that because they were working on something holy (rebuilding the temple) it made them holy and entitled to God's blessing. Enter Haggai with a message from God concerning this theological misunderstanding. This Sunday, we will see how this same misunderstanding can affect us, and how the gospel liberates us from the traps of legalism and works-based righteousness, moving us forward in grace-fueled obedience to God's purposes.

Making Jesus non-ignorable Doug Last week we began a mini-series in the short prophetic book of Haggai. In week two, we are going to look at the second message of the prophet Haggai as he encourages both the people and leaders in the rebuilding of the temple. Haggai's message to us is relevant in the sense that the times are discouraging and in the face of opposition how do you move forward in doing God's Kingdom work.
The people of Haggai's time were looking to the past and the past glory and were wondering if there was any point for the present work, or for that matter, any hope for the future. The leaders, both political and religious, were dealing with opposition that came from within by way of discouragement and leaving the work of rebuilding undone. Then their enemies were putting pressure on them and preventing them from the work that God called them to. Haggai reminds the people and the leaders that it is not in the buildings or land or armies that we find our worth and our strength, but it is in the presence of God. The temple reminds the people that God is with them. This true for us today because in the presence of His one and only son Jesus Christ we have access to God.
